Understanding the Home Energy Rating System Index
With the introduction of the Stretch Energy code in Massachusetts, the residential building community had a new player in the permitting process. The Home Energy Rating System (HERS), has been in use with EPA’s Energy Star Homes, and the USGBC’s LEED Homes, among other certification programs. The HERS system provided quantifying for what had been what had been a qualitative house characteristic – energy efficiency. We will discuss the HERS raters role, tools and value. This class will also look at using a HERS rater and rating to succeed with residential construction in a Stretch Code town.

We will also learn about how to achieve a good HERS index and how the index is used.
