Building Enclosure Council: Natural Stone Facades — Attachments and Other Considerations (Hybrid)

Natural stone has been used as an exterior/ envelope building material for thousands of years. For much of history, stone comprised both the structure and the façade - often in wall widths of at least 10”. Since the early 20th century, we have mainly used and seen stone as a façade or veneer, in material widths ranging from roughly 6” down to ¾”. This seminar will discuss and explain the key facets of stone façade design in a northern/ freeze-thaw climate. Topics will include stone types and selection, stone widths, mechanical attachment types, adhered thin stone veneers, full-bed stone veneers, and a brief review of the embodied carbon attributes of natural stone.
