What inspired you to push forward and build Existing Conditions into a successful, nationally recognized company, despite challenges along the way?
Kurt Yeghian: I was inspired by the incredible response from the architectural and building owners' community in Boston and New England, which revealed a gap in the market for our level of service. By building strong relationships and investing in our local area, we became an extension of our clients' teams, leading us to confidently expand our model nationally, believing it would succeed on a broader scale.
Jared Curtis: A major reason for investing in Existing Conditions was witnessing the immense value our service provided throughout the development, construction, and design process. I also noticed that few companies in the Northeast were utilizing this service, highlighting an untapped demand for accurate as-built drawings. This insight made it clear that there was a strong opportunity for growth.
What pivotal moments or projects signaled Existing Conditions was ready to move from a local to a national presence?
Kurt Yeghian: What signaled to me that it was time to expand to a national presence was when we started working with large entities, such as banks with multiple locations across several states. While measuring and modeling those locations was straightforward, managing and coordinating with numerous stakeholders in different states and regions was the real challenge. Successfully handling that complexity showed me that we were ready to roll out our services nationally.
Jared Curtis: Joining forces with GPRS has granted us access to a national network of highly skilled project managers, many of whom have extensive laser scanning experience. This year marks a significant turning point, allowing us to quickly serve projects nationwide, even if the architect is based in Boston.
How did you navigate the process of scaling Existing Conditions, and what strategies were most crucial for expanding into new markets?
Kurt Yeghian: Recruiting and retaining top-quality team members has been essential for our growth. By focusing on helping team members achieve their career goals, we’ve built a strong, committed team that has enabled us to expand into exciting new markets.
Jared Curtis: Our ability to mobilize quickly is a significant advantage. With teams on the ground in major markets where Boston-based architects work, we can provide faster, more efficient on-site service and support.
What guidance would you offer leaders seeking to take their company to the next level in the AEC industry?
Kurt Yeghian: My advice is to ensure you have a team in place that not only understands the vision but also collaborates effectively and is both intelligent and hardworking. This kind of team is crucial to achieving our goals. There's an old saying that smart people hire smart people, and I believe this collaborative spirit is key to our success and value to clients.
