Event Description

Join us for a tour of the new Inpatient Tower Addition at Brigham and Women's Faulkner campus before it opens to patients this summer!

Faulkner Hospital, established in 1900 as a community hospital in Jamaica Plain, Boston, offers a stunning view of the Arnold Arboretum. Due to its elevated location, it is often referred to as the "hospital on the hill." The new Inpatient Addition Building, designed by NBBJ, is a five-story extension built on a vacant lot next to the existing Main Building. This expansion was created to provide high-quality care for the hospital’s growing patient population and to meet current healthcare standards.

The addition's first floor will expand the radiology department, while the second floor will house the endoscopy department. The top three floors will contain 78 patient rooms that cantilever over the building’s base, taking advantage of the expansive views of the Arboretum.

The massing, materials, and rhythm of the façade ensure that the addition complements the campus architecture. It meets the client's design criteria of creating a unified appearance that reflects the scale and feel of a community hospital.

The design team incorporated prefabricated systems during the planning phase of the new inpatient addition at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital. Multiple trades participated in a design-assist process, collaborating with the owner, construction manager, and architect to create prefabricated headwalls and toilet pods. These components were assembled off-site in large quantities by union trades. This approach not only maximized the advantages of prefabrication but also utilized the expertise of local unions, supporting broader initiatives in Boston to hire local labor.

During the walk, we will discuss the steps the design team took to prototype the toilet pod and the prefabricated headwalls. This discussion will include contributions from various subcontractors and building inspectors. Additionally, we will cover best practices and strategies for implementing prefab projects.
