Event Description
For more than a century, the Henry Ford Hospital has been Detroit’s safety net hospital for emergency medicine. Today, a new Henry Ford Hospital and ED is under construction adjacent to the legacy hospital. This new Emergency Department, double the size of the existing, with 100 patient spaces, is designed to streamline front-end operations and reduce the length of stay while standing ready to respond to pandemics and mass casualty events.
We will discuss the integrated planning process and the complex group of stakeholders, recognizing the limitations and challenges of this process. We will define the components of a large urban ED and key adjacencies and then dig into the operational strategies that drove the design at HFH. We will study the complex patient flows, patient acuity and diverse patient types that present at the ED. Central to the design is an inherent flexibility of space and clinical operations to adjust to the dynamic ever changing and unpredictable patient load. This is summarized into three stages of operation: 1. Normal 2. Surging 3. Over Capacity. We will discuss how this concept of transformation has changed the operational staffing and flow and how the design will accommodate this. We will review the special components such as the behavioral health unit, Trauma, Special Pathogen unit, and how their design evolved.
