Event Description
The Conservation Legacy Center honors the significant history of the U.S. Forest Service in conserving our national forests and grasslands. Inspired by this mission, the tree-shaped columns and folded roof evoke the sensation of being immersed in a forest, with 16 different species of solid heavy timber supporting a canopy of mass plywood panels. From the outset, we understood that these unique tree-shaped columns would be crafted by a master carpenter skilled in heavy timber, which influenced our design approach to highlight traditional handcrafted wood joinery. A key challenge arose from the fact that the fabricator does not use 3D digital models, requiring us to find alternative ways to effectively communicate the design. LWA will showcase the intertwined process of blending digital and physical study, from design and model-making to construction documentation.
