Event Description

The MIT Hobby Shop, 265 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, is celebrating the completion of our first academic year in our brand new location. Since the shop’s founding in 1937, the Hobby Shop has been open to the MIT community for building and fabrication in a wide range of materials and processes, and now for the first time, we have windows to the outside world. With our upgraded space, we have also upgraded our machinery. From ultra high-precision CNC mills to our re-built antique band saw, about half of the machines in our new location are new to us.

Although MIT has many shops and fabrication spaces on campus, the Hobby Shop is unique in our access and scope. Being part of the Department of Student Life situates us uniquely on campus with the ability to provide access to students, faculty, staff and alumni. We also strive to have low barriers for access and learning and a broad range of machines to accommodate the needs of our diverse membership base. Our teaching and training style is very personal and focuses on as-needed just-in-time training rather than scheduled classes.
